Summary
Proposal for a project awarded 3rd place in the International Competition Reinventing Cities São Paulo. The competition is the result of a partnership between SP Urbanismo and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, selecting the best proposals for the redevelopment of various public open spaces in the city center.
Ecomimesis presented a proposal for Area 1 – Boulevard Prestes Maia and Kinjo Yamato Market, transforming a section of an important avenue into a linear park and creating a plaza near the market, where a parking lot currently operates.
The Project
The presented project aims to create a place conducive to reconnecting with nature, employing sustainable solutions, and generating collective well-being. The proposal consists of redeveloping the stretch of Av. Prestes Maia by creating a park and the surroundings of Kinjo Yamato Market into a plaza, providing pedestrians with quality public spaces in areas currently occupied by automobiles.
The Kinjo Yamato Market Plaza (1,300m²) aims to expand the activities of the surrounding area, providing a leisure space sheltered by a canopy that directs rainwater to rain gardens. Avenida Senador Queirós is reduced to expand the public walkway, create bike lanes, and plant beds with native vegetation, ensuring pedestrian safety. A support point for motorcyclists between existing roads is also proposed.
The Urban Linear Park project (18,800m²) on Av. Prestes Maia moves the North-South expressway underground and features local low-speed roads on its perimeter, primarily for public transport and local drivers. The organicity of the floors and the wooded green areas mimic natural designs and create areas with various uses such as children’s areas, sports areas, seating areas, and groves, considering the main pedestrian flows and crossings in the region.
