Summary

      After more than two decades of intense social mobilization and the active participation of public and private agents in recent years, the neighborhood of Realengo and the city of Rio de Janeiro gain an important public park. The Realengo Susana Naspolini Park project, spanning over 80,000 square meters, includes a variety of spaces and uses. Its program incorporates requests made to the city hall by the local community and social movements. The purpose of the office for the Park was to create, through Nature-based Solutions, an environment that prioritizes and connects the user to nature, even in an urban context, and provides leisure options, meeting spaces, and opportunities for knowledge exchange to its visitors and nearby residents. The office was responsible for the basic and executive designs of the Park and for coordinating all the complementary designers.

The Project

      The Park project was developed through solutions that aim at socio-environmental balance and the integration of nature with the city/neighborhood through the planning of green infrastructure and the use of Nature-Based Solutions (SbN), favoring the mitigation of environmental impacts and adaptation to face the problems caused by climate change. The project relies on SbN (Nature-based Solutions) through green and blue hydraulic control infrastructures, such as bioswales, rain gardens, water accommodation gardens to minimize/mitigate the impacts of extreme rain on the land, totaling a total of reforestation and forestry, vegetable garden, nursery, urban afforestation, planting project for native species of the Atlantic forest, water mirror, routes with different materials, children’s areas (for babies, children and water), public squares and internal squares, works of special arts (towers, gazebo, walkways) gym area, skate park, sports complex, barbecue areas, urban furniture and solid waste management.

Expected results:

  1. Establish a new catalyst for urban, environmental, social and economic development for the Realengo neighborhood;
  2. Contribute to environmental depollution and minimization of the effects of extreme events, such as heat islands and heavy rainfall;
  3. Promotion of sustainable use of the park through the management of new proposed ecosystems, environmental restoration and the use of landscape potential;
  4. Strengthening environmental awareness through the promotion of environmental education activities and the sustainable use of natural resources;
  5. Strengthening recreational, sporting and cultural activities linked to the historical value of the neighborhood.
