Summary
Project for the Redevelopment of Dr. João Mendes Square, through the winning project of the C40 Reinventing Cities Competition, by Matteria Architecture & Urbanism. The firm joined the competition team for the development of the executive project, being responsible for all the landscaping. Their proposal includes the implementation of native vegetation, providing shaded areas for pedestrian stay and ensuring a better experience for the population.
The Project
The new design for the public spaces between the Historic Center and the Liberdade neighborhood includes the addition of approximately 2,500 m² of permeable area, alongside a rainwater management and reuse system, using nature-based solutions such as rain gardens and bioswales. The aim is to reduce carbon emissions with new tree-covered areas and lower temperatures with changes in pavement and increased soil permeability in the area. Additionally, the reduction in the number of vehicles and the promotion of active mobility occur alongside strategies to reduce energy consumption through renewable source lighting.
Despite being a historic center of great cultural importance, today the public open spaces of Dr. João Mendes Square are fragmented due to various road axes, except for the continuous space of Largo Sete de Setembro and the esplanade between Avenida da Liberdade and Rua Conselheiro Furtado. The esplanade, with significant urban value, was preserved outside the intervention perimeter, while Largo Sete de Setembro, with significant vegetation, lacks adequate spaces for pedestrians to stay, being an integral part of the project area.
The proposal, therefore, seeks to revitalize these public spaces, providing a pleasant experience for pedestrians and enhancing the historical and cultural heritage of the region.
